Harrodsburg, Kentucky

Founded in 1774, Harrodsburg is the first permanent settlement west of the Alleghenies. Mercer County was formed in 1785 and Harrodsburg was named the county seat. Fort Harrod was founded by pioneer, James Harrod, who disappeared in 1792. Some believe he was killed by Indians, others that he was murdered by a fellow hunter, and some that say he intentionally disappeared to start a new life. Old pioneer stories like that and others are still told at the Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg. Harrodsburg is also home to many other interesting attractions, including Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill and Beaumont Inn.

Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill was founded in 1805 as settlement for members of the religious sect known as the Shakers. The community prospered for a while and the Shakers built over 200 structures on over 4,000 acres, but by 1910, the community was in decline and in debt and was closed. The last Shaker of Pleasant Hill passed away in 1923. It is now owned by a nonprofit organization and is a beautiful place to visit and tour.

Attorney Tyler Roberts and his wife enjoy driving to Harrodsburg to dine at the Beaumont Inn. The tavern offers a variety of exceptional bourbons and the dining room was awarded the James Beard Foundation America’s Classic Award (get the chicken). Guests can also stay in one of the many historical guest rooms.
